Drenthe affects you

Drenthe might very well be the most beautiful province in the Netherlands. The diversity and size of the many nature reserves is enormous: from the extensive moorlands and fields of heather to the river valleys and sand drifts. These breath-taking landscapes are undisturbed in the nature reserves, such as the Reestdal, Fochteloërveen and Hunzevallei and in the National Parks Drents Friese Wold, Dwingelderveld and Drentsche Aa. Only a small percentage of the province is developed. Nature itself isn’t just magnificent, but it also harbours a grand archaeological treasure and cultural historical elements, like the impressive hunebedden. When we explore Drenthe, we do so in the footsteps of our ancestors.

Culture
CultureThe cultural history isn’t just visible in the landscape; villages with beautiful Havezaten (country houses) and farms shape the image of Drenthe. This province has been a source of inspiration for artists for centuries. There are many galleries where you can enjoy a variety of art forms in authentic surroundings. Apart from these galleries, Drenthe has various museums focusing on art and history. Examples here include the oldest and largest museum in Drenthe, the Drents Museum (www.drentsmuseum.nl) in Assen, the Gevangenismuseum (Prison Museum, www.gevangenismuseum.nl) in Veenhuizen or the Hunebedcentrum (www.hunebedcentrum.nl) in Borger.

Would you like to enjoy a short or a long holiday? Drenthe is an excellent place for both. The residents of Drenthe are friendly and will happily welcome you to their hotel, bed and breakfast or campsite. You will not get bored in Drenthe, as there is more than enough to do for both young and old. Drenthe has more than 1400 kilometres of cycle lanes, comprising paved paths alternating with cobbled lanes and shell paths. There is also an extensive network of walking, horse back riding and mountain biking routes.

Drenthe for kids
Drenthe for kidsThe opportunities are endless for the little ones amongst us. What do you think of climbing and building dens in the Lorken Speelbos? Right next to it is the Boomkroonpad, where you can follow a path that goes through the tree tops. The Wooden Path of Theodoor is also an unforgettable experience. Children can imagine the story of the little pig Theodoor through ‘walking with him’. They will also thoroughly enjoy hiring a horse and covered wagon. But Drenthe has so much more to offer than just nature. What do you think of an exciting rollercoaster in Drouwenerzand Attractiepark (www.drouwenerzand.nl), viewing the stars in Planetron (www.planetron.nl), driving a car in Verkeerspark Assen (www.verkeersparkassen.nl), watching tigers in Emmen Zoo (www.dierenparkemmen.nl) or meeting your heroes in Plopsa Indoor Coevorden (www.plopsa.be/plopsaindoorcoevorden/).

Of course Drenthe is also the place to be for more urban entertainment. Lively terraces, stylish shops and beautiful theatres with a rich and varied program: you will find it all in the atmospheric cities that are spread across Drenthe: Emmen, Assen, Hoogeveen, Coevorden and Meppel.

Drenthe is a province where you can actively relax. A place to get energy and ideas. A place to get inspired. In other words, Drenthe affects you.
